Biography

Cult of Lust: Noir Nights

As seen in the novel, Cult of Lust: Noir Nights, Rose Riley was a world-famous, albeit shy, botanist, whom ultimately was destined to become the Queen of Thorns, as seen in the novel Throne of Thorns: Rose's Requiem. Rose was born in Las Vegas, Nevada, to her parents, Walter and Clover Riley. As a child, she watched how much her parents loved each other. Rose wanted that love someday as well, and she had an amazing childhood adored by the pair. Introverted, shy, and happy with her own company, Rose gravitated towards flowers and plant. Her childhood room decorated in floral patterns, her dresses usually the same, and even wearing flowers in her hair, Rose loved plants. Intelligent and with a mind like a sponge, she voraciously consumed any information about plants that she could find, long before there was an internet. However, this wonderful childhood changed instantly one day.

In her early teens, her mother, Clover, had told her goodnight and kissed her before closing the bedroom door like any other night. Rose had no idea that this would be the last time she would ever see her mother. Hours later, her father frantically burst into the room rousing her from her peaceful slumber. Walter held her, apologizing profusely and crying, something Rose had never seen him do. He kept repeating that because of him, her mother left and would never come back. She had no idea that the nosferatu Brone Lorcan had come at the behest of Lord Ivor to have her mother taken. Her entire life changed. Walter had been fired as a detective from the Las Vegas Police Department, and with Clover gone, he turned to alcohol, spiraling into a terrible cycle of depression and addiction. Over weeks, Rose slowly lost respect for her father, and after a year, she began to actually dislike him. Desperate not to become like her dad, Rose studied even harder at school and became wholly independent at home, but things grew worse- her father began to become a local celebrity for the wrong reasons. He would get drunk and stumble down the Vegas Strip yelling warnings about vampires taking over the world. He even spent time as a suspect in the alleged homicide of Clover, but without a body and no proof, there were no charges filed. However, these events did have an effect on Rose, and she found herself wondering if her own father could have been capable of ending her mother's life.

All this caused the young woman only to grow more introverted and shy. The high school kids made fun of her, and her father did little else but drink. They eventually lost their house and wound up living in a small, dirty apartment. Rose filled out college grants and the day after she graduated high school- an event that Walter did not even bother to attend- she moved out and started at the local university. She excelled at botany due to her passion and knowledge, and eventually graduated. While working on a master’s degree, she was hired at a lab and made a name for herself. After obtaining her final degree, she was quickly approached by representatives for the massive biotech company, MedUSA. They offered Rose an incredible amount of money to aid in some of their research and she quickly and earnestly accepted. Her entire task at the MedUSA Las Vegas Laboratory was to discover a way to cause fertile plant life to grow easily in arid climates. Sometime later, while reading scientific journals, she learned of a woman named Siri Solen that piqued her interest.

Rose learned that at another lab on the west coast, Dr. Siri Solen had discovered a protein called NGA1 that controls the transcription of a key gene that ultimately allows plants to survive after periods of drought. The discovery meant that by controlling this protein, plants could effectively withstand long periods without water- if someone forgets to water their plants for a couple of days, their foliage would easily survive. Excited, Rose quickly contacted Siri, asking all about her research and the scientists quickly became friends. Rose and Siri chatted online often, when suddenly, one day Siri seemed to disappear. Siri was working also for MedUSA at the time in Portland, Oregon, and Rose approached her supervisors asking if Siri had found a new place of employment. They told her that Siri Solen had been killed in a lab accident that had destroyed the entire facility, and Rose was heartbroken, not knowing the truth about Siri and her new life with the Night Stalkers. Rose had only two close friends, Siri Solen and Chieko Naru, a woman as passionate about technology as Rose was about flowers. Losing one of those friends, thinking Siri dead, Rose turned inward as she had done as a child, and focused only on her work. She had been put on a new project to try and mix plant and animal DNA.

It was at this time in her life that Walter suddenly appeared. Rose was shocked to see her father after so many years, and her heart told herself to keep him at arm's length. She wanted to love him, and did love the original Walter, but she simply could not let herself get hurt again. She did not know it, but Walt had just gotten involved with the succubus, Dionyza, and the Bureau of Demonic Analysis, a secret government organization that no one believed was real. Fearing for his life, and seeing what he had become, Walter wanted to reconnect with his daughter. What Walt did not know is that he led Dion straight to Rose, and the evil demon saw a weakness. She could not understand how Walt had evaded her lust magicks, not realizing that the true love Walter and Clover had worked against her succubus powers. However, Dion reckoned that she could use Rose as a hostage or bargaining chip- and maybe even corrupt the nerdy, innocent Rose in the process. Though Rose was ultimately saved, that darkness remained lurking inside her.

Throne of Thorns: Rose's Requiem

During her time in Dionyza's grasp, Rose did grew more corrupt and lascivious, slowly succumbing to lust and her personality grew into that of a dominatrix than a timid submissive. By the time Walter managed to find Dion and Rose, it was almost too late. Ultimately, Rose was seemingly saved, but deep inside her heart lurked demonic corruption. Unknown to Rose at this time, in Oregon, Absinthe Van Gothen had begun monster hunting, and Abby had slain the troll, Stenhållare. Deep in his caverns, he had used his nature magicks and had grown gardens of foul flowers that Absinthe deemed, 'Strange Plants'. With the defeat of the troll, Marble Halls collapsed in places, and authorities rushed to the scene. They found growing intensely fast from the rubble, these alien plants. Moles within the police, had contacted MedUSA, and Zmiya Plissken eagerly dispatched units. The plants were collected.

Soon after, Rose returned to work feeling more energetic and her mind felt sharper. She found that a new plant species had been discovered. This is where things got darker for Rose. Her superiors wanted her to work with these strange plants- and they wanted her to do it with live animals. Normally, Rose would have likely quit, but because of her recent corruption, she found a bit of arousal in this. She watched in awe as animals were taken over by the plants changing into plants themselves. However, the plants and infected animals seemed to sharing some kind of hivemind and goals. Her boss did not like this, and unveiled a secret substance to Rose- xenopox.

This fluid, created from the poison of the snake god, Ophion, contained the ability to fuse the DNA of two organisms into one. Generally, this would have been between two animals, which results in creatures like Spider Mutants or Bear Mutants. However, it normally had no effect on vegetation. With these plants, Rose managed to do what she had set out to do, which was to create an animal and plant hybrid. With a combination of the plant's strange properties, mixed with the foul abilities of xenopox, she made a virus capable of creating plant animals. At this point, with a stain on her soul, Rose began thinking about her entire love for plants. A love that recently had been warped into a lust. The fetishized concept of being a plant made her too aroused and tantalized to resist and she infected herself.

Rose was a unique person to begin with, and tainted by demons, mutated by xenopox, and now warped by the magic of the strange plants, Rose manifested into one of the most powerful entities on Earth. Her skin turned green, blood and chlorophyll became intertwined inside her veins, wriggling tendrils sprouted from her back. By the time her metamorphosis had completed, gone forever was the timid Rose Riley, and in her place was Rose Thorn, the Queen of Thorns. With her new lust for power and the dominatrix persona at the helm, she went about conquering the MedUSA lab, turning its inhabitants into Anthrophytes building a faction known as The Thorned.
