Notes and Trivia

Scape Ore Swamp- a place that Helen Newkirk will never forget. There, in Lee County, when she was just an early teen, she survived an encounter with the paranormal. The locals often refer to it as the ‘Lizard Man’, and some that believe in aliens call such creatures reptoids. However, the truth is far more horrendous. Deep in the swamp a cult of Ophion, the snake god, worship their master. Those that worship him often grow scales or fangs. If they manage to find a way to ascend, they become even more reptilian. These Ophidian Demons are cold-blooded and savage. However, the young Helen knew nothing of ancient cults and snake people as she and a group of local kids searched the swamp for frogs in the balmy summer afternoon.

As the sun hung lower in the sky, her mother began calling her, but she and the other fourteen year olds ignored the parent calls. They were having fun and just enjoying the early evening. Eventually, her mother, Nancy, in her anger at Helen’s actions, made her way into the swamp threatening to ground her for the rest of the summer. She stumbled upon the group of teens, and they endured her verbal attack. However, as Nancy yelled at Helen and friends, the high priest of the Ophidian Cult silently slithered through the mucky water. Nancy had her back to the water and in the middle of her scolding, the lizard-like man leapt from the water and sank his fangs into her neck!

In that moment, the children froze from fear and confusion. Three long seconds passed, and the demon withdrew its fangs. Nancy fell to the muddy ground, unconscious and twitching. Then, the monster turned towards the young adults! The teenagers screamed and darted into the swamp. One by one, the swamp claimed the kids. Some fell to the cult, some to the wildlife, and by nightfall, a lonely, terrified Helen hid within the hallowed husk of an old, fallen tree. Then she heard it- her mother’s voice! Her mother cooed and called, promising that she forgave Helen and wanted to give her a present. She said that because of Helen, she was now happier than ever. Something in her mother’s voice sounded cold and alien. The way she cooed, the hissing, there was something dreadfully off about her mother. Helen peered out of her hiding place, and saw her mother in the dim moonlight and haze of the swamp. She was nude and covered in scales. Her eyes were yellow and her pupils were only slits. A long forked tongue flicked from her mouth, and the monster from before stood beside her mother, running its clawed hands over her body.

She darted her head back into the log, but her mother suddenly explained that she tasted her on the air. She heard the couple approach and again, her mother whispered sweet promises trying hard to lure Helen out. When that failed, her mother stuck her head in, and Helen screamed! Then her mother’s eyes glowed, and Helen felt herself pulled into them. Her mother cooed and sighed, and beckoned Helen forward. Helen cried out inside her own mind to stop, but her body obediently crawled towards her mother, their eyes locked in a stare. Her mom grabbed her and pulled her out of the log. For a moment she smiled, then hissed bearing two fangs and that is when the gunshots rang out. Her mother spun around just as the priest died. Then, before the BDA agents could shoot, her mother dove into the muddy water and disappeared. Suddenly, Helen’s mind recoiled and became her own and she fell, crying in the mud. The agents took her and that was more than thirty years ago.

To this day, and every day, Helen blames herself for what happened to her mother. If she had only returned to her mom, then their entire lives might have been normal. Now, she tries hard to stop anything to do with Ophion, but recently, within the last year, murmurs have been heard. Supposedly, an ancient cell or egg that has held the god has been found, and Helen knows it is only a matter of time before one of the serpent worshippers, perhaps even her own mother, breaks the seals and unleashes the demon upon the Earth!
