Shadow Magic

Description

MagicShadow.jpg

Shadow Magic is an metaphorical umbrella term to describe any and all type of magic spells that are derived from the Outer Darkness or the denizens thereof. Shadow Magic is one of the two primary schools of magic in the Anaxverse (the other being Light Magic). In direct contrast to Light Magic, shadow magic garners power from evil and chaotic beings and the dark vibratory frequencies of the Outer Darkness. Using the dimensions of the cosmology as a spectrum, shadow magic draws power from dimensions on the side of the Outer Darkness. While not being an inherently evil school of magic, the sheer fact it draws from dimensions of the void means the spells take energy rather than supply it. Thus, a person could technically use Shadow Magic in order to do good works, even though it is derived from chaotic evil powers.

Shadow magic is drawn from dimensions such as the Shadowlands. Its spells are highly corruptive, tearing away at the sanity and spirit of those that use it. The spells are drawn from powerful entities, based on the spell cast. Spells can be called from Baron Samedi, Ah Pwash, or other entities. Using too much shadow magic can overwhelm a caster, causing loss of self control while granting absolute power. An example of this is seen in The Anax: Call of the Cursed One when Evelyn Addams draws from the shadows to such a degree that she becomes a Shadow Lord. Reaching a breaking point, the only way for her to regain her humanity was by being saved by The Anax, drawing in that extra power. Necomancers and shadow witches are prime users of shadow magic.

Types of Shadow Magicks

Shadow Magic has several additional subsets of magic composing it, which can then be broken down into specific schools of said magicks. It should be noted that magic is not divided along exact lines and can be used in conjuction on a spectrum, however, all Shadow Magic will fall somewhere into these subsets or a mixture thereof. They have exact polar opposites among the subset of Light Magicks.

Corrupt Magic

This magic corrupts or causes corruption via infectious means. Corrupt magicks wrought disease, famine, and sickness. The entity that represents that absolute paragon of corrupt magic and frequencies is Nergal. The opposite of corrupt magic is arcane magic.

Death Magic

This magic works as an anti-life power and can also be used to reanimate the dead. Death magicks absorb life, vitality, and energy. The entity that represents that absolute paragon of death magic and frequencies is Ah Pwash. The opposite of death magic is life magic.

Lust Magic

This magic excites and titillates the body or mind into perverted sexuality. Lust magicks twist love, intimacy, and devotion. The entity that represents that absolute paragon of lust magic and frequencies is Lilith. The opposite of lust magic is holy magic.

Profane Magic

This magic causes unholy changes within the mind. Profane magicks incite anger, hate, and malice. The entity that represents that absolute paragon of profane magic and frequencies is Aka Manah. The opposite of profane magic is sacred magic.

Warp Magic

This magic unnaturally warps, reshapes, or distorts biology through shadow, darkness, and evil. The entity that represents that absolute paragon of warp magic and frequencies is Ophion. The opposite of warp magic is nature magic.

Shadow Magic Spectrum

As stated above, magic works as a sort of spectrum and spells and magicks are malleable. This means that different styles of shadow magic have evolved over time since the Age of Myths. A caster weaves different types of shadow magicks to create new spells and effects that merge certain attributes of the frequencies together, not unlike an artist mixing colored paints. The results of this can be devastating for either the caster or their intended victim. Below are some examples of such hybrid magicks.

Blood Magic

Blood magic is drawn from the vitality of victims, using their life force to garner power. These spells are a meshing of Warp Magic and Lust Magic. Often powered through human sacrifices, rituals dedicated to Ah Pwash and other entities will cause a surge in power. Many of these sacrifices are more potent if the sacrificed are dear to the caster. Power can also be gained by number, as several vampires use blood magic by sacrificing troves of human victims. Blood magic can be regenerative, restoring vitality at the cost of taking it from another. Vampires and blood witches are prime casters of blood magic.

Plague Magic

Plague magic is drawn from the power of the babylonian god, Nergal. These spells are a meshing of Corrupt Magic and Death Magic. Focused on poison, rot, and pestilence, plague magic deteriorates one's health and fortitude. It is highly contagious, with its casters often being diseased themselves. Plague magic often targets a single victim, but will spread and affect entire swathes of people. This magic can manifest as powers within Nergalian Demons, but can be used by other casters as well. Plague witches are prime casters of plague magic.
