Codex Gigas
Codex Gigas
Introduction
The Codex Gigas was created in the early 13th century in the Benedictine monastery of Podlažice in Bohemia (modern Czech Republic). Hermannus Heremitus was a thirteenth century Benedictine monk, and legends say that, as a resident of the monastery, Herman the Recluse was condemned to be walled up alive and starved to death. However, in a plea for his life, he convinced the Abbot to let him live if he could create a book that encapsulated all earthly knowledge in one night. Herman wrote until midnight, upon which he realized he could not finish his masterpiece! In a panic to save his life, he supposedly sold his soul to a demon in exchange for the ability to finish the Codex Gigas. What is the truth of the matter? Perhaps someday we shall find out, but what we do know is that the book manage to survive from the middle ages to this very day.
Throughout the centuries it found itself on show by some and hidden away by others, but eventually, it fell into the hands of a coven of dark witches in old New York. When their enclave was discovered by witch hunters, they hid their possessions- the Codex Gigas among them. Until one day, a construction worker named Dagan Erebus happened to fall into the very room containing it! As his coworkers and foreman yelled, his eyes scanned the room. Bottles, books, scrolls and strange things lie all around, but the moment his eyes fell on the book, he had to have it. He snatched it up and hid it in his pack before being pulled up. When museum representatives arrived he made no mention of it. Dagan used the power of the book for evil, and managed to make a deal with a demon named Aka Manah. However, his lust always seemed to grow larger, and due to the efforts of the D.A. Amelia Williams, Dagan was caught his Aka Manian cult was exposed.
The Bureau of Demonic Analysis (BDA), the U.S. governmental agency overseeing mystical antiquities and demonic influence, gathered up his extensive library, confiscating the Codex Gigas with the multitude of other volumes. Through the strange powers of The Librarian, the tome, and many other magical books in Dagan’s library, vanished from the evidence room of the BDA, and appeared in The Library. There it sat, until a very unlikely soul happened upon it.
When Bo happened upon that dimension of knowledge, he obtained the Codex Gigas for the moment he walked into the place; the tome knew he held a familiar yet seemingly infinite power. Bo left with the tome, which led to the events of the novel Cult of Corruption: The Summoning.
