Creature Types: Monsters
Creature Typing
In the Anaxverse, creature typing helps provide additional detail on a creature and what they are skilled at. All creatures have a typing in some way. Creatures typing encompasses both beasts and monsters, as well as other non human entities one may discover.
Monster Types
Throughout the lore of Brandon Somerville, there are a large variety of monsters prevalent. Many of these were released into the wild from the well-intentioned Siri Solen, who broke them out of a lab where they were being studied and tortured.
Aberration
Aberrations are twisted creatures, morphed by the xenopox.
Acolyte (Nuit)
Acolytes of Nuit stand as the most fervent zealots of the goddess, perhaps even more so than the priests of the Cult of Night, the latter having reached a level of power whereupon politics takes the place of true belief in any deity. Generally armed with little more than faith and a sacrificial dagger, these scholars of the vampiric religion spend untold years studying anything that can be found regarding Nuit and her place in history. Decades ago, as Ivor weaved his plans, he began summoning acolytes to his lair, bidding them to bring any information that they had regarding Nuit and offering them his protection for the sharing of their knowledge. Many came, and many more in recent years as it became clear that Ivor grew close to finding a way to bring their revered goddess back into the Physical World.
Afanc
Afancs are dolphin like sea creatures, with much sharper teeth and batlike fins.
Air Serpent
Air Serpents were once dragons. Much like wyverns, these dragons were corrupted by the toxins of the Ophidians and became monsters. They have no legs, but can fly. These massive serpents twist and coil through the sky before swooping down on their prey. Once they do they will either wrap their bodies around the victim, constricting them until they suffocate or they will bite them. They have two reserves of poisons in their fangs, one which paralyzes and kills, and the other which will transform the victim into a snake demon. They have also been known to utilize a type of hypnotic stare, causing the victim to remain perfectly passive while the air serpent enacts whatever diabolic plans it has in store for their target.
Ammonoid
This crustacean flows along the ocean floor, attaching those nearby. Linked page: Ammonite
Amphibiman
These sea creatures have green scaled skin, and a fin along their feet and backs. They have a rugged look. Linked page: Amphibiman
Banshee
Since the eldest days of Ireland, there have been reports of banshees. Hovering over graves or even predicting when a family member may soon die, they usually wail and shriek into the night. Her name is connected to the mythologically important tumuli or “mounds” that dot the Irish countryside. Their dead eyes were said to appear desperate and weeping, and they are seen as portends by any who observe them.
Banshees are incorporeal spirits, usually invisible to the naked eye or ears. However, when a person can see or sense them, especially if the observer stands alone, the banshee will wail and scream, coming ever closer. Their keening can send the listener into abject depression where they self harm or kill themselves or possess them entirely, staying next to the person. In these cases, the afflicted were usually exceptionally positive people. However, the banshee whispers to them constantly, souring their mood and giving a gloomy disposition to the once sunny person. Like many spirits, they can drain the health and lifeforce of a human or even scream and wail to such mournful morose that a person simply dies, their own soul willing to leave the human form to escape to the Inner Light. Barghest

Biter
The Xenopox Virus was created at MedUSA, a laboratory, in Oregon, though as a company, its facilities are spread across the globe. The base of the chemical concoction was the actual poison of the snake god, Ophion. In ancient times, anyone that Ophion bit would become snake people, reptilians. They would bite others, and the further away from Ophion’s original victim, the less human traits the victims would keep and the more of a reptile they would appear.
The original poison used had come from an ancient unearthed relic. Using the poison as a starting point, MedUSA began testing and tweaking the properties. The original idea of the board of directors and several of the scientists was to find a way to resurrect the snake god himself, perhaps by cloning. However, all attempts using the poison, failed. They then tested the poison on animals and people. By studying the effects on a microscopic level, they grew to understand the properties of the substance better. It caused mutations of varying types and degrees based on mixing with the DNA of different organisms. After the lab was destroyed by Siri Solen, the supervillain, Dr. Demented, found a new base of operations.
His own reasons for working with MedUSA were his desires to raise his wife from the dead. She had been in cold stasis since the fall of the Nazis in Germany. He tirelessly strove to find a sequence of Xenopox that would revive dead tissue. He had also spent much of his time studying the works of Johann Conrad Dippel. Dippel had managed to find a way of using electricity along with injecting Nightbred blood into a cadaver to return it to life. However, Dippel gave up the practice after Karloff, his first success, proved to be too dangerous. Not having the heart to kill Karloff, Dippel sealed the monster away and changed his focus to the new steam technologies of the day. Dr. Demented managed to find the monster but that victory proved fruitless for raising his wife. However, he used some of Karloff’s blood- formerly vampire blood, and found that it affected the virus. It could completely reanimate dead flesh or even subsume living flesh turning the victims into ‘blood mutants’.
Biters are one such product of this experimentation. These were humans that Dr. Demented experimented upon by injecting the new strain of Nightbred infused Xenopox. Like most blood mutants, Biters are randomly mutated and grow a range of adaptations and cognizance. Generally, they have oversized mouths with massive sharp teeth. Tentacles tend to grow out of the victim’s body and wriggle and lash. Contact with any of its contaminated flesh with unprotected skin can result in the virus passing to the new host. As with all blood mutants and Xenopox strains, the afflicted mutate within minutes, becoming a new creature altogether and leaving their humanity forever behind.

Broodmother
Broodmothers are bloated tick like spiders. Capable of supporting an entire colony of spiders and spider slaves, they can be ferocious. They can be found in the sewers.

Reanimated corpses are one such product of this experimentation. These were cadavers that Dr. Demented experimented upon by injecting the new strain of Nightbred infused Xenopox. Using techniques similar to Dippel’s including electrical currents, these ambling corpses sprung back to life. However, they were seen as failures to the doctor because they retain little to no personality. In fact, if no stimuli are present, they simply stand silently. Needing his dead wife’s mind intact, Demented finally gave up on using these as a means of giving her a new body. Abandoned, these corpses roamed the halls of the old Hawthorne Asylum until Demented’s defeat at the hands of Absinthe Van Gothen, whereupon he triggered a self-destruct sequence, blasting the building to bits and the undead corpses with it.

Preferring water over land, they will spend hours swimming and waiting for prey. Once located, they will pounce, dragging their quarry into the water and drowning it. The only exception to this is with some humans. Able to pass the mutagenic virus via their bodily fluids, rather than consume, they will occasionally mutate a human to mate with them. Absinthe Van Gothen fought these mutants in the Portland Sewer System, specifically the Big Pipe Project section.

Ghost
Ghosts are incorporeal spirits. They are not necessarily evil, and may simply be lost souls. They have memories of their past, and can interact with those that can commune with the dead.

Gjenganger
A gjenganger (Norwegian: Gjenganger, Attergangar or Gjenferd; Danish: Genganger or Genfærd; Swedish: Gengångare) in Scandinavian folklore is a term for a revenant, the spirit or ghost of a deceased from the grave. In reality, a gjenganger is not a ghost but a corporeal undead. They did originate in what was once Scandinavia. There, during the Age of Myths, parasitic worms, as small as inchworms, had found their way into the Physical World. They would enter living hosts and eat away at their lifeforce and as they drained it, they would multiply. Outside a living host, the worms dematerialize after only minutes, but inside, as they reproduce, the host’s heart stops. Their biology, now tainted by the Outer Darkness, mutates. They grow extra rows of teeth and their fangs are hollow. Through these, when they bite, large numbers of the tiny parasites squirm through and enter the bite. The hosts desire blood and flesh, perpetually hungry and when they inject it, the sustenance converts into more parasites.
Absinthe Van Gothen encountered a gjenganger in the Lone Fir Cemetery. It had eked out a place to exist there in a mausoleum. However, she needed to empower the loa spirit, Baron Samedi, to save the Bishops from Heloise Laveau. Though the creature desperately tried to share its affliction with her, Abby won the day.

Gnome
Gnomes are small gray men with pointed colorful hats. They dwell in the forest.

Goblin
All goblin-kin share some traits. They are usually much shorter and wirier than humans. They are generally very agile and belligerent. Goblin-kin have a certain, natural penchant for cruelty and anger. And, they are, by nature, all male, needing to capture and transform human women as a means to reproduce. However, that reproduction cycle is entirely faster than humans, and goblin-kin are typically born within a week of conception. This is due to their highly shortened chances for survival since they constantly kill each other. There are countless types of goblin-kin around the world, but they are all subterranean monsters, hating the sunlight and preferring to pilfer and kill at night. The final unifying trait which they all share is the uncanny and natural affinity for portal conjuration and teleportation. Almost any goblin-kin can open a portal, step through it, and appear somewhere else entirely.
In folklore a goblin is a monstrous creature that appears in the mythology of multiple European cultures, first attested in stories from the Middle Ages. They are ascribed various and conflicting abilities, temperaments and appearances depending on the story and country of origin. They are almost always small and grotesque, mischievous or outright malicious, and greedy, especially for gold and jewelry. In reality, goblins match that description rather well. The namesake of the goblin-kin race, goblins are the eldest of their kind. Like trolls, they formed from Nergalian plague; this infected a cadre of dwarves that had fought away a force of the demons. After they succeeded, they began mutating, and collapsed the cavern, however a few survived and now twisted and evil, they made their way into deeper places.
Goblins are cruel, twisted, and devious by nature. There are no naturally occurring goblins, but goblin shamans have found a magical rite that will change a human female into one of their own. They are the smallest of their race, but are also the most prolific. Many times, goblins can be found in swarms wherever trolls live. They form a type of symbiotic relationship, with the trolls capable of fighting larger enemies and the goblins as servants to perform tasks for their master.

Yet, gorers are known for absorbing their victims (or the gore left behind) into their own bodies, growing even larger in size. Because of this, gorers can have multiple limbs or heads.

Lich
In folklore, a lich (/ˈlɪtʃ/; from Old English līċ meaning “corpse”) is a type of undead creature. Often such a creature is the result of a transformation, as a powerful magician skilled in necromancy or a king striving for eternal life using spells or rituals to bind his intellect and soul to his "phylactery" and thereby achieving a form of immortality. In reality, a lich is very much the same. They are magic users that through whatever means became an immortal undead creature. These means can vary as there are spells, rituals, and even beings such as Ah Pwash that can create a lich. They are not mindless like many undead; rather, they retain their knowledge and magical powers, and seek out the living for two purposes. One is that they feast on souls and life, and the other is that once they do, they can raise the husk that they leave behind, animating and controlling it.

Marbendlar
In Scandinavian folklore, mermen of varying types have been talked about for centuries. In reality, a marbendlar is a large, muscular monster of the deep with thick flowing hair and a beard. They have massive webbed hands and feet and rows of sharp teeth. These creatures reach back to the Age of Myths when a crew of Norsemen was at sea. Without battle, without reason, by chance, their vessel began to sink. Angered that this happened and powerless to stop their fate, they cursed the seas and gods. In retaliation, they were transformed into marbendlars. Twisted into hulking creatures, they lost their minds to rage and sank beneath the sea. They mostly stay at the very bottom of the ocean in total darkness, but when their lust and desires become too great, they will swim to the surface looking for women to mate with. Known to even go onto a shore, they drag their victims into the water and bite them. The woman will slowly become insane, growing scales, her hair becoming green, her eyes yellow, and snarling, she will descend with the marbendlar to his lair so that their lineage may continue.

Mummy folklore has its origins in the 19th century when Egypt was being colonized by France and, subsequently, by Victorian Britain. The first living mummies in fiction were mostly female, and they were presented in a romantic and sexual light, often as love interests for the protagonist. In reality, mummies are a type of undead known as “risen”. The Risen are undead that are animated by necromantic magicks. They do not have wills of their own nor their own minds. They simply follow the orders of the one that raised them. In the case of mummies they are much more resilient to physical damage than a zombie, likely due to the prayers and spells cast upon the corpse in millennia past. There have even been reports of mummies being decapitated or the victim of a headshot, that still continue forward. However, unlike a normal zombie, mummies are highly susceptible to flames.

Nachzehrer
In German folklore, a nachzehrer is a sort of vampire. The word nachzehrer translates to “after (nach) living off (zehren)” likely alluding to their living after death or living off humans after death in addition to the choice of “nach” for “after” which is similar to “nacht” (“night”). The nachzehrer was prominent in the folklore of the northern regions of Germany, but even in Silesia and Bavaria, and the word was also used to describe a similar creature of the Kashubes of Northern Poland. In reality nachzehrers are insidious undead. Lanky with long limbs, fingers and feet, they skitter through graveyards or dark, remote places. Their hair is always white and their eyes a yellowish glow. Their skin tends to be pale and yellowish with a waxy feel to it. But, the thing that most stands out unique to nachzehrers is their psychic abilities to “whisper” into the minds of mortals.
They are somehow attuned psionically so that they simply infer, somehow, the secrets and regrets of living humans nearby. Then, they whisper into the minds of these people. Nachzehrers are created only through suicide. In some cases the sad soul refuses to leave the body and only desires to make others share the same fate. This is what the whispers do; they fill the human’s mind. The victim becomes depressed and hopeless. And, when the person cannot stand it any longer, they end their own life. If under the power of a nachzehrer upon death, that victim will certainly rise again as a nachzehrer themselves. Absinthe Van Gothen fought a nachzehrer in Portland’s Lone Fir Cemetery when she tried saving Arion and Ayana Bishop from Heloise Laveau. The nachzehrer soul was one of the spirits required by Baron Samedi to aid him in opening the way forward.

The nurses of the supervillain, Doctor Demented, are innocent women that he abducted and twisted to his will effectively turning them into henchmen to do his bidding. They are part of the collective term for his minions known as The Demented. He uses different methods or combinations to achieve his results. The doctor will use technology in some cases, for example his hypno-goggles, to weaken the resolve of the victim. In the case of more submissive minds, this can be enough to allow him to hypnotically suggest whatever he wants, thereby changing the thoughts of the victim. He developed tech that can be bolted directly into the skull and overthrows the neurons in the brain, changing the actual brain chemistry and this also achieves his dark goals. In the most willful and stubborn cases, or in the case of metahumans, the doctor will perform a lobotomy. In such a state, the patient no longer resists the doctor at all, but this often results in the Demented Psycho minions. Demented Nurses are completely loyal and the effect of their brainwashing is absolutely irreversible.

Pirate (Ghost)
In folklore, a ghost is the soul or spirit of a dead person or animal that can appear to the living. Descriptions of ghosts vary widely from an invisible presence to translucent or barely visible wispy shapes, to realistic, lifelike forms. In truth, ghosts are incorporeal spirits that remain for some reason in the Physical World. Made of the same substance that physicists call dark matter, ghosts fly and dart about us every day. They are perceptible only in light outside the normal human visible range in the electromagnetic frequencies. The reason for ghosts remaining in our dimension ranges from fear of some kind of judgment in the afterlife, to attachment to an object, place, or person, and even for revenge. Any place can be haunted by a ghost, but many times the crueler and dark ghosts will be found skulking in places like abandoned prisons and graveyards. Ghosts are usually invisible but necromancers, psychics, and other undead beings can see and hear ghosts.
Ghost pirates haunt ships. Sometimes they remain aboard the vessels upon which they died and other times, like in the instance of the Flying Dutchman, the entire ship itself somehow becomes an anchor to the Physical World and a ghost in its own right. When the Flying Dutchman came to Sauvie Island, her cursed crew sought cursed treasure. They could feel it was nearby, and it was from an old Viking ship which had gone down there centuries earlier, her crew now ravaging draugr. These draugr and the ghost pirates took to fighting, and Absinthe Van Gothen was caught in their crossfire. Normally, ghosts are incorporeal and invincible to anything except magical attacks, but Vlad Țepeș used his power of the Blood Suit to create projectiles known a blood bolts. Since Vlad walks somewhere between life and death the bolts actually made contact and brought harm to the ghosts to the point that they dematerialized, falling into the Outer Darkness. Eventually, after finding Kendra Tallulah and using the magical artifact Gleipnir, Absinthe boarded the Flying Dutchman and managed to defeat Captain Hendrik Van Der Decken. She took some cursed gold from the ghost ship before it disappeared.

Pontianak
In Indonesian and Malaysian folklore, the pontianak (Dutch-Indonesian spelling: "puntianak"; Jawi: ڤونتيانق) is a malicious and carnivorous flesh-eating female vampire ghost. Other common names include "matianak" and "kuntilanak". The figure resembles that of the spirit of a woman who died during pregnancy. This is despite the fact that the earliest recordings of pontianaks in Malay lore describe the ghost as originating from a stillborn child. In reality, they are indeed women that died during pregnancy due to the direct result of their murder. These murders must be committed by a family member or the father of the child. The woman will rise as a ghoulish creature that haunts dark places and graveyards and eats the flesh of the living. They can cause other women to become pontianaks as well if they birth the undead child in their wombs and that child then enters the womb of their victim. The mortal woman will be drained of blood and lifeforce and then roam about. When a pontianak does give birth to their small zombie babies, a new one will gestate quickly that will be a clone of the last. Absinthe Van Gothen fought a pontianak in Portland’s Lone Fir Cemetery when she tried saving Arion and Ayana Bishop from Heloise Laveau. The pontianak’s soul was one of the spirits required by Baron Samedi to aid him in opening the way forward.

Priests and priestesses of Nuit stand as the most devious members of the Cult of Night. They are usually made up of former acolytes that have given up on the true religious dogma in order to promote themselves and gain political power. Generally armed with only their prayers, these wily and cunning Nightbred know much of religion- often having been religious humans, and tend to be power hungry and well spoken. Decades ago, as Ivor weaved his plans, he began summoning the priests of Nuit to his lair, bidding them to bring any information that they had regarding the goddess and offering them his protection for the sharing of their knowledge. Many came, and many more in recent years as it became clear that Ivor grew close to finding a way to bring their revered goddess back into the Physical World. Each of these priests vie to be the one that welcomes the goddess as she leaves the Outer Darkness, in the hopes that she will grant them untold power.

Revenants are part of the legend of various cultures, including Old Irish Celtic and Norse mythology, and stories of supposed revenant visitations were documented by English historians in the Middle Ages. In reality, revenants share some in common with vampires and some in common with draugrs. They are like bloodthirsty zombies that still have a semblance of their former humanity. However, they are obsessed with blood and life, but are opportunistic hunters, staying in dark places and graveyards.
Revenants are shunned by Nightbred because of their habits and appearance. They wear simple rags or even run about nude and do not have a high level of intellect. Their flesh is usually discolored and rotted, and they smell of the grave. Animated human skeletons have been used as a personification of death in Western culture since the Middle Ages, a personification perhaps influenced by the valley of the dry bones in the Book of Ezekiel. In reality, such skeletons are a type of undead known as “risen”. The Risen are undead that are animated by necromantic magicks. They do not have wills of their own or their own minds. They simply follow the orders of the one that raised them. In the case of skeletons, they are generally used as basic fighting units. They have little endurance as, whatever would break bones, breaks them. They also require little death magic to raise and animate them when compared to even zombies. When the Night Stalker, Absinthe Van Gothen, went to the Oregon Museum, Evelyn Addams used her death magicks to raise the skeletons of the museum, animal and human. She discovered that even fossils could be animated this way, having had some sort of closeness to the original bones. Abby again fought such skeletons in the Shanghai Tunnels as those Risen were raised by the vampire necromancers of Lord Ivor.
Skeletons can also be found in the form of other creatures. An animal skeleton can be reanimated, or even dinosaur bones.

Spectre
In folklore, a spectre is the soul or spirit of a dead person or animal that can appear to the living. In reality, they are much more heinous. Spectres resemble a person wrapped in their death shroud from the olden days, though in the current zeitgeist these are erroneously labeled “bed sheets”. The death shrouds, occasionally called mound shrouds, grave clothes, winding-cloths or winding-sheets, or burial shrouds were traditionally made of white cotton, wool, or linen, though any material can be used so long as it is made of natural fiber. Spectres are more powerful than ghosts in that a ghost can only drain the energy and lifeforce of a human. However, spectres are also weaker than wraiths or the rarer phantoms that can fully possess a human body. Generally lurking in dark or abandoned places, the spectre will attach itself to the mortal, linking themselves via an unseen chain. No matter how far the human flees across the world, the spectre will always find them.
Once they have the person isolated and fearful, the spectre will whisper into their minds and dreams, urging them to do unspeakable things. In the end, after the spectre feels that it has sowed enough chaos with its current victim, the entire possession ends in a murder suicide with the linked individual being devoured by the spectre at the moment of their death. Spectres, like other undead, can also be summoned and controlled by a necromancer as was the case in the novel Desideratum: Blood Bonds. When Absinthe Van Gothen makes her way through the Shanghai Tunnels of Portland, Oregon, she fights spectres that were raised by the Nightbred necromancers of Lord Ivor.

Strigoi
In Romanian folklore, strigoi are troubled spirits that are said to have risen from the grave. They are attributed with the abilities to transform into an animal, become invisible, and to gain vitality from the blood of their victims. In reality, strigoi are ravenous undead generally formed when evil wizards, mages, or spell casters are murdered in ways that cause their spirits great turmoil. Their souls refuse to leave the body, and it reanimates itself. As in life, they are avid shadow casters, and are one of the stronger undead beings. They do rot and decompose, albeit at a very slow rate, and their eyes are usually a milky, soulless white. Strigoi will eat the flesh of the dead, but prefer the blood and warm meat of the living.
Strigoi are shunned by Nightbred because of their eating habits and appearance. Though strigoi are very similar, they are different, and vampires see themselves as vastly superior. As such, they will seldom tolerate the presence of a strigoi. Thus, the creatures are usually confined to abandoned buildings, mines, or graveyards. Absinthe Van Gothen fought a strigoi in Portland’s Lone Fir Cemetery when she tried saving Arion and Ayana Bishop from Heloise Laveau. The strigoi’s soul was one of the spirits required by Baron Samedi to aid him in opening the way forward.

In Indian folklore, the Timingila or Timingilam (Sanskrit: तिमिंगिलम्) is a huge mythological aquatic creature that can swallow whole whales in one bite, as written about in the Mahabharata (Vana Parva 168.3). The Timingila is also mentioned in Srimad Bhagavatam (12.9.16), Ramayana (Yuddha-kanda 4.114), Susruta Samhita (Ch.45), and Caitanya-caritamrta (Madhya-lila 13.142). In reality these massive eel creatures swim the oceans looking for prey. They are capable of eating a human in two bites and can even create a slight electrical field around themselves to incapacitate prey by stunning it. Absinthe Van Gothen fought timingilas when she came to the Sauvie Docks with the Night Stalker, Kendra Tallulah, in search of The Flying Dutchman.

Voodoo Doll
The term Voodoo doll is commonly employed to describe an effigy into which pins are inserted. Although it comes in various different forms, such practices are found in the magical traditions of many cultures across the world. Heloise Laveau, for example, used such a doll when she fought against Absinthe Van Gothen in the Lone Fir Cemetery. But, besides the handheld object that allows for painful curses, some of the more powerful practitioners, like Heloise, can make life-sized dolls and animate them. Ultimately, this is the same type of shadow magicks employed to create golems. In this case, they sew together cloth to make the doll and rather than stuff it with stuffing, they fill it with shadow magic. The doll is completely mindless and acts in any way the creator desires. Abby fought these voodoo dolls while trying to rescue the Night Stalkers, Arion and Ayana Bishop, and collect souls for Baron Samedi.

Voodoo Slave
The English word “zombie” was first recorded in 1819, in a history of Brazil by the poet Robert Southey, in the form of “zombie”. The Oxford English Dictionary gives the word's origin as West African and compares it to the Kongo words nzambi (god) and zumbi (fetish). A Kimbundu-to-Portuguese dictionary from 1903 defines the related word nzumbi as soul, while a later Kimbundu–Portuguese dictionary defines it as being a “spirit that is supposed to wander the earth to torment the living”. And oftentimes, the zombie will be an undead corpse that wanders about looking for flesh or brains, but not all zombies work this way. Powerful voodoo practitioners can use their spells and materials to create a living zombie. Virtually mindless, these people have their souls in possession of the caster. It works similarly to the Mind Control spell listed in Eleanora Blackwood’s Book of Shadows. These victims will follow the commands of their master, regardless the order because they walk about almost in a fugue state. Absinthe Van Gothen fought voodoo slaves when she went to Lone Fir Cemetery to aid the Night Stalkers, Arion and Ayana Bishop, against the voodoo witch, Heloise Laveau.

Vulkodlak
Vulkodlaks are literally undead werewolves. They are formed in different ways, but the most common is that a werewolf is slain through its lifeforce being drained via magic. When this occurs, the corpse does not dissipate into ash as usual with monsters, and instead, rises again. The bite of a vulkodlak will turn a person into a zombie, hence why in some countries, like Serbia, they are synonymous with vampires. But, unlike a regular zombie, vulkodlaks are just as agile as they were in life. This makes them very powerful zombie minions. Heloise Laveau was attacked by a werewolf in Lone Fir Cemetery. He had come to stop her, but she was far too powerful. She drained the would-be hero dry of life and he rose as her undead pet. The Night Stalkers, Arion and Ayana Bishop managed to trap the vulkodlak in a chapel within the graveyard. However, Absinthe Van Gothen entered the building and killed it as she sought the pair.

Wight
In folklore, a wight (Old English: wiht) is a creature or living sentient being. In its original usage, the word wight described a living human being, but has also come to be used within fantasy to describe certain undead. The earliest example of this usage in English is in William Morris’s 1870 translation of the Grettis Saga, wherein haugbui is translated as “barrow-wight”. In reality, wights are general warriors and royalty of bygone times. Very similar to draugrs, they tend to haunt the location of their demise or burial. Oftentimes their treasures are cursed, and if one touches their claim, they will become wights as well, under the power of the wight that owned the trinket; the same for those slain by their weapons. A wight’s weapon will claim their victim’s soul, and the afflicted will then become an undead known as a Wightslain. One of the most famous wights was Zawisza the Black Knight. He loathed the Nightbred- especially Ivor, and came to destroy both Lord Ivor and the Countess Elizabeth Báthory. He raised a vast undead force, including wights, liches, and others, and brought them to Portland, Oregon. Absinthe Van Gothen fought these wights in the Shanghai Tunnels.

Wraith
Wraiths are incorporeal spirits that tend to have led very foul lives but managed to avoid being pulled into the Outer Darkness. They retain a desire for life, for only in life can they sin and have what they perceive of as “fun”. Wraiths are much more powerful than ghosts or spectres, but not quite as powerful as the rarer phantoms. Wraiths usually wait for prey in graveyards or abandoned places as their method of possession can be witnessed by other living, and that could ruin their plans. They are always draped in black, hooded cowls and appear to have dead skin. Though technically incorporeal, they are very tuned to the Physical World and are still rather substantial. They cannot exist in sunlight, as it will banish them from the mortal plane. However, as long as they stay in a dark place like a cave or crypt, they will be fine.
Once they find suitable prey, they will insinuate their own consciousness into their victim. They then have full control over the human body, but the human becomes undead. Zombie
Zombies are reanimated creatures, and are part of the undead race. Their reanimation can be done magically, biologically, or electrically. Magical reanimation is most prevalent as rising corpses, subjected to the will of the reanimator. This is usually done through the power of a necromancer. Biological zombies are people that have been put in a state of mind akin to zombie behavior, with extreme cases including the decay of their bodies. Electrically produced zombies are created monstrosities, usually from the mind of a mad scientist. Using electrical pulses to mimic blood flow, the decaying internal organs can work anew.
