In folklore, gargoyles are monsters inspired by architectural elements. While they were believed in mythology to frighten away evil spirits, the idea of such statues physically coming to life is a more recent notion. In reality, the reverse is true. The architectural elements were inspired by the creatures themselves, and when a gargoyle dies, instead of becoming ash like most slain monsters, they become stone. They have very tough flesh and massive wings, and their origins in the Age of Myths point to some sort of demonic breeding. They come in many shapes and sizes, but are opportunistic hunters. They will wait patiently, soaring high above their prey or watching from a rocky place. Once they observe their victim long enough, they will descend to steal the target away for food or mating. As with other monsters, all gargoyles are male, and require human females for propagation.

The Night Stalker, Absinthe Van Gothen, unknowingly encountered a gargoyle on Mount Hood when she was seeking Jacques Lombar. Being patient and observant, the creature stalked her from high in the cloudy night sky, watching as Absinthe annihilated the monsters that she encountered. As much as the creature desired to have her, he decided that she would likely slay him. Thus, he decided to simply wait for another woman to come to the mountain on another night.
