Dark Elf

"Through the ice, snow and fog, we frolic."

Biography

In Norse mythology, Dökkálfar (“Dark Elves”) and Ljósálfar (“Light Elves”) are two contrasting types of elves; the dark elves dwell within the earth and have a dark complexion, while the light elves live in Álfheimr, and are “fairer than the sun to look at”. The Dökkálfar and the Ljósálfar are attested in the Prose Edda, written in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson, and in the late Old Norse poem Hrafnagaldr Óðins. Scholars have produced theories about the origin and implications of the dualistic concept. In reality, the dark elves come from the dimension called Niflheim- a place of eternal fog and freezing snow. In this dimension the elves stay hidden from the sun and live in dark caves.

Dark elves are inherently magical beings. From birth, without being taught, they can use rudimentary magic. In time, as they grow and develop, they become masters of elemental magic, at least of ice, wind, and sometimes earth, but their weakness is fire, and no dark elf body can withstand the heat of fire spells. They are generally lanky and do not make strong physical warriors. They dislike the sun and bright lights, and, if found in the Physical World, it will almost always be in a cave or cavern. They do not like the light elves, and the two generally war if they meet. Dark elves have an otherworldly beauty about them and their skin colors range from alabaster white, to blues, to grays, and even a silvery flesh.
