In Fijian mythology, Dakuwaqa (Dakuwanga) is a shark-god. He was greatly respected by fishermen because he protected them from any danger at sea and sometimes protected them from evil denizens of the sea. He is called Takuaka by the Tongans, and in both myths, he fights an octopus that defeats him. In reality, the ancient peoples of the Polynesian Islands had witnessed the god battling a kraken. When the pair fought, tsunamis formed and harmed the islanders. Dakuwanga lost the battle because he broke away in order to spare as many lives as he could. This kraken then swam the seas without anyone to stop it. However, Dakuwanga eventually came across a human monster hunter named Calis Van Gothen. The man was aiding Theodore and Deborah Ravenhurst as the pair was at sea seeking the Egg of Ophion. Dakuwanga and the hunters were enough to harm the kraken. The wounded monster fled, sending waves of krakenites to attack.

Now, Dakuwanga fought these creatures alongside the mortals, and they eventually destroyed the legion. He would track the kraken for some time and it eventually settled off the coast of Oregon. Too powerful for the sea god to destroy on his own, Dakuwanga kept his eyes on the creature. One night, Kendra Tallulah, a Night Stalker, took Absinthe Van Gothen on a monster hunt, seeking the ghost ship, The Flying Dutchman. After stealing a boat, they made their way towards some abandoned docks on Sauvie Island. The pair was separated when a kraken rose up from the sea to devour them, attracted by the Blood Suit made from the blood of Vlad Țepeș. Once Kendra hit the water, she quickly put space between her and the behemoth. In truth she was spared because the creature only wanted to consume Absinthe and add Vlad’s power to itself. Kendra watched the massive beast come down on Abby and assumed the worst.

The suction of the beast pulled Abby below the waves. Luckily, she held the magical ring, the Seal of Solomon. It had belonged to her mother, Muriel Van Gothen as was given to her by Roy McCoy. The ring allows the wearer to breathe underwater. The kraken swam up from the depths, this time certain it would swallow her whole. Abby, luckily, had magic bombs on hand that she had purchased from the House of Haggle. Releasing several, they sank into the water and into the massive maw of the beast. The bombs exploded, destroying the kraken from within and it died, sinking to the bottom of the ocean. Most of the nearby krakenites fled in terror from seeing a god destroyed. Dakuwanga, who witnessed the spectacle, blessed Absinthe for the deed. This blessing allowed her to safely touch the cursed Aztec gold aboard The Flying Dutchman.
