Description

The ancient Persian warrior Rostam wore the Babr-e Bayan (sometimes called Palangineh) into battle. The magical armor is immune to the elements such as fire and ice. Some of the tales in Shahnameh speak truths as do some Sogdian texts, for the jerkin is made of the enchanted fur of a large cat and the leather within comes from the skin of a sea serpent. However, because of its magical properties, it can change shape into whatever look the wearer deems appropriate. When he finally gave up his life, Rostam gave the Babr-e Bayan to his son, Faramarz. From him it was lost in time to series of men.

It was during the Crusades that the armor was next found and pilfered, and brought back to Europe. There, it was worn under the garb of some nobles, rendering them heartier than others due to the resistance to heat and cold that this magical artifact provides. This is how the Countess Elizabeth Báthory eventually obtained it. After landing in Portland, she required certain services that Hobs could provide, but these things do not come cheap. She bargained with the hobgoblin, and managed to obtain certain items for herself along with gold, and one of the items she traded was the jerkin. Brone Lorcan happened into the shop not long after, demanding to buy as much as he could with his coin. Hobs sold it to the nosferatu so that he could give it and many other weapons to Absinthe Van Gothen.
