In folklore, a pixie (also pixy, pixi, pizkie, piskie and pigsie as it is sometimes known in Cornwall) is a mythical creature considered to be particularly concentrated in the high moorland areas around Devon and Cornwall, suggesting some Celtic origin for the belief and name. In traditional regional lore, pixies are generally benign, mischievous, short of stature and attractively childlike; they are fond of dancing and gather outdoors in huge numbers to dance or sometimes wrestle, through the night, demonstrating parallels with the Cornish plen-an-gwary and Breton Fest Noz (Cornish: troyl) folk celebrations originating in the medieval period. In reality, many of these traits are well placed. They are usually very small, at most only a few inches tall. They have large heads for their frames, like children, with large glowing eyes. They frolic in the night through forests and moors. This general happiness and energy is to do with a special magic known only to them.

The substance called “pixie dust” is enchanted and gives a sense of euphoria and energetic rush. For male pixies themselves, the concoction is completely harmless. They use it nightly, sometimes for centuries, and enjoy the feelings, but other than giving them pleasure, it bodes no harm. However, in female mortals, pixie dust is insidious. It instantly rewires their brains on a level that would require most man-made drugs months or years of abuse to achieve. The woman is instantly hooked, and compliant, wanting more of the stuff. The more that she inhales, the more her body changes, until she shrinks and becomes a female pixie. As with many other creatures of magic, only males are born through sexual reproduction. The once female human becomes a drug-addled breeding machine for the pixie that hooked her and will remain so forever.
