There are many different types of witches in the Anaxverse.  The term “witch” is an umbrella term and can come to encompass many different magical practitioners.  There is an old saying, “A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.” Formerly intended as a compliment, the phrase means that a person is a generalist rather than a specialist, versatile and adept at many things, and that sums up shadow witches.  These magical practitioners dabble in many different dark arts.  They tend to write volumes of notes on spells and incantations and put them into books known as “books of shadow”.  They call on all five types of shadow magic- warp, lust, corrupt, death, and profane.  However, they never truly become masters of any of these magicks, instead cultivating a rounded education and application.  This makes them weaker in some ways, but much stronger in others, for they have no inherent weaknesses and can change their tactics as their needs change.

This also aids them in keeping a mostly normal human appearance, though they tend to have purple eyes. Also, since they work with so many different types of magic, they can find themselves in contact with several different entities and forces of the Outer Darkness. They also tend to be excellent scryers and can peer into mirrors or crystal balls and watch anything that is happening, as long as it is dark. In day or bright places, they are completely blind with their mystic visions. Eleanora Blackwood is, without a doubt, the most infamous of all shadow witches. Her own book of shadows was acquired by Evelyn Addams, a necromancer, and it helped Eve learn about many other types of shadow magic and unlocked her greater potential. One thing that shadow witches often must contend with is losing themselves to the chaotic forces of the Outer Darkness. Too much spellcasting can cause them to become wicked and often self-destructive.
