Biography

Pre-Desideratum: Blood Bonds

Grimey came into being at an aircraft production line in Niagara Falls, New York during World War II. His predecessor, a gremlin from England, had managed to sneak into the complex and took over an aircraft. The malfunctioning equipment was instantly thought to be due to Nazi interference, and the US guardsmen destroyed the unmanned plane. When it blew up, the original gremlin, Geargrinder, became two dozen new gremlins. Grimey was one of these. Now of a fresh, new mind, he had to learn things for himself. He listened to humans over the next few years as he milled about the machinery. Thus, he speaks akin to a 1940’s New Yorker. After the war ended and production halted, he skulked around New York for a time, and found other goblin-kin. They led him to Harriman State Park, where a series of caves brimmed with goblin-kin.

He always felt out of place with the much more angry and belligerent brethren, and definitely disliked the cruel troll that lorded over them all. He missed machines and people. However, that all changed one night when Selena Santana burst into the lair. Grimey was terrified as this woman cleaved through the goblins as if they were nothing and fled out of the cavern system. As he ran, he came across her beloved motorcycle and contemplated stealing it. However, Selena did not realize the massive number of goblin-kin in the mountain and she retreated. As he heard her approach, Grimey leapt into the nearby bushes. At that point, Selena jumped onto her bike, but the old motorcycle would not start. As the angry screams of a goblin army neared and Selena was screaming for the cycle to start, Grimey decided he’d rather leave with her than stay with the mean troll. Steeling himself, he slowly emerged.

Selena whipped out her weapons, but Grimey cowered on the ground, pleading for her to take him with her. As long as she would, he’d start her bike for her and they could both go. Hating goblin-kin with absolute vitriol, there was a moment where she contemplated slaying him, even if it meant being torn to pieces by the approaching horde. However, she promised not to hurt him if he saved her, and he possessed the motorcycle. They took off just as the goblins rushed at them and escaped into the night. Once they got to the slummy hotel she was staying at, she told him to go away or she would slay him. Seemingly hurt, a tactic she thought was fake, he skulked away. However, each night he would be waiting for her by her bike. Though she chased him off, he generally had funny remarks and compliments for her. Finally she asked him what he wanted, and he said he only wanted a friend.

Still skeptical, she asked him more questions. He told her about his life, how different goblin-kin function as a society, and even gave her maps of the caves in good faith. He did not like the troll either, and she was shocked when he gave her pointers on how to defeat it. She eventually succeeded because of his help, and grudgingly invited him to move on to the next hunt with her. He possessed her bike and the pair only grew closer over time. Their path led them all over the U.S. until they wound up in Portland. There, Selena met up with the local Night Stalkers, but hid Grimey from them.

Desideratum: Blood Bonds

In Desideratum: Blood Bonds, Grimey Geargrinder is a gremlin and best friend of the Night Stalker, Selena Santana. When Absinthe Van Gothen arrived, Grimey was wary of her. However, after she helped save Selena’s life, Grimey trusted her. He revealed his presence to Abby, and over the next few nights they became friends. After Rosaline Vaas constructed a “mechanoman” originally designed by Johann Conrad Dippel, Absinthe asked if Grimey would possess it in order to help fight the Nightbred, to which he eventually agreed. He helped ward off the Nightbred by using the machine, and the night may have gone very differently without his help.

Appearance

Grimey is a green gremlin who wears a black bowler cap. He has a joking, playful demeanor.
